Ahl al-Suffah (People of the Suffah)
The Origin of Charitable Work in Islam

  • Their Virtue:
“(Charity is) for the poor who are restricted in the cause of Allah and cannot travel through the land (to earn a living). An ignorant person would think them self-sufficient because of their modesty. You will recognize them by their appearance. They do not persistently beg from people. Whatever good you spend, indeed Allah is Knowing of it.” (Qur’an 2:273)
  • Definition of the Suffah:
A shaded area at the back of the Prophet’s Mosque, designated by the Prophet ﷺ as a place for poor Muslims.
  • Their Number:
Their number at any one time ranged from 30 to 70 people, while the total number who belonged to Ahl al-Suffah was approximately 120.
  • Care Provided for Them:
The Prophet ﷺ placed them close to him and ensured their five essential needs:
    1. Food (a handful of dates for every two people)
    2. Drink
    3. Shelter
    4. Clothing
    5. Knowledge (the most important of all)
  • Through knowledge, they were transformed from poor people into scholars and distinguished individuals, making the Muslim community dependent on their contributions.
  • Sources of Support:
    1. Every orchard in Madinah would donate a cluster of dates (15–30 kg) to them. The revelation of the verse, “O you who believe, spend from the good things…” (Qur’an 2:267), is connected to this practice.
    2. Charitable donations that reached the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Due to the abundance of dates (as mentioned in the narration of Abu Hurairah and Satan), a storage facility was established for them, with Mu’adh ibn Jabal serving as its custodian.
  • Prominent Members:
    Abu Hurairah,
    Abdullah ibn Mas’ud,
    Abdullah ibn Umar,
    Abu Sa’id al-Khudri,
    Abu al-Darda.
  • The chart indicates the number of narrations transmitted by each of them, when they joined Ahl al-Suffah, and which of them were martyred.
  • The most prolific narrator among them was Abu Hurairah, their leader, who narrated 5,374 hadiths.
  • The Impact of Knowledge on Them:
Despite their small numbers, the narrations transmitted by Ahl al-Suffah accounted for approximately 40.51% of all hadith narrations.
  • Miracles Associated with Them:
The miracle of the bowl of milk, the garment, the dates, and the Prophet’s ﷺ supplication for Abu Hurairah.
  • Knowledge is the path to a meaningful life; therefore, the Prophet ﷺ later entrusted them with major responsibilities.
  • Ahl al-Suffah represent a practical model for solving social problems, especially caring for the poor.
  • Response to the Doubt Regarding Abu Hurairah’s Narrations:
Although he narrated 5,374 hadiths, only 110 were narrated exclusively by him; the rest were also narrated by other Companions.
